Nara: The todaiji

The Todaiji temple was built at the behest of the emperor Shomu. It is devoted to the Vairocana Buddha ('Buddha that shines throughout the world like the sun'). It was inaugurated in 752 AD.
It is the host of the Todaiji great Buddha which was initially covered with gold leaves.

Binzuru (Pindola) Edo period, 18th century
Pindola is one of the sixteen disciples of the Buddha. It is said to have excelled in mastering occult powers. It is commonly believed in Japan that when a person rubs a part of Binzuru and then the corresponding part of his body his ailments there will disappear.
