These pictures have been taken at the Accelerator Test facility in Japan. They show many elements usually found in particle accelerator (the ATF is ring with a circumference of the order of 200m).

A quadrupole is a special magnet with 4 poles (2 North and 2 South). This allows to focus the beam in one direction (but defocuses it in the other direction).
